The U.S. military is mobilizing equipment and manpower to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

A state of emergency has been enacted in New Orleans in the U.S. state of Louisiana today, after the devastating Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Monday.


As Hurricane Katrina approached New Orleans, this past weekend, tens of thousands of people fled the city, seeking refuge in other parts of of Louisiana and in eastern Texas.


Officials say US military plans to drop more massive sand bags onto breached levees or plug gaps with shipping containers.
